I am a registered investment advisor in the state of Washington, and manager of a small private investment partnership. But those things only came about recently.
Five years ago, I was working for a large construction firm when I came across the Marketocracy website. They were looking for the best investors in the world in order to hire them to manage money. It reignited a passion inside of me. You see, that was the path I had set out on more than 15 years ago while in college, but life had somehow brought me to a different point.
I had known in college that I wanted to get an MBA and work in financial analysis. Instead of majoring in business, I chose to major in both history and political science believing that would form an important base in terms of viewing the world. I then worked for a couple of years for Franklin Resources, the parent company of the Franklin, Templeton and Mutual Series funds, before heading off to get an MBA.
I attended Texas A&M University on a fellowship, and graduated in 1997 with a 3.8 GPA. I wanted to start as an equity analyst and work my way up to being a portfolio manager, but I didn’t want to raise a family in a large city like New York or Chicago. That is probably why my career path took a detour. I ended up working for a large private construction company, in an administrative position. The opportunities were great, but I just didn’t have the passion for the construction industry. That is when I stumbled across the Marketocracy website.
I had studied some of the greatest investors in history like Warren Buffett and John Templeton, and I knew I had the same educational background as portfolio managers, but I had just never had the chance to show my abilities. Marketocracy gave me that chance. By 2003 I had been selected for Marketocracy’s m100, but I had so little time to study companies with the pressures of a full-time job and family. By 2004, I knew it was time to make a change.
I said goodbye to the corporate job with all its security and benefits and moved my family of six (obviously I must have had some free time) a thousand miles away to my wife’s hometown where costs were cheaper. I was going to work in the investment field and was committed to eventually managing money for others. I started analyzing stocks for a publisher of investment manuals on micro-cap, community bank, and high quality unlisted stocks. Soon I was writing a bi-monthly newsletter, as well as occasional articles for Marketocracy’s Marketscope, some of which were published by Forbes on their website.
In 2006 I started an investment partnership. Today, I manage a small investment partnership for accredited investors, and continue to manage a portfolio for Marketocracy, and am a member of their m100 and m10.
